Hotlinking is a commonly accepted Internet phrase for linking to another website’s images. In other words, if you build an Internet site, somebody else may want to use the images which you have and instead of downloading them from your site and then uploading them to their Internet site, they could simply put links to your website. In this way, whenever a visitor opens their website, the images will be loaded from your account, hence stealing from your own monthly traffic quota, along with the copyright issues which could arise or that someone can be trying to trick people into believing that they are actually on your site. In rare instances, documents and other types of files can also be linked in the same exact way. To stop this from happening and to avoid this kind of situations, you may permit hotlink protection for your site.
Hotlinking Protection in Shared Website Hosting
Since our Linux shared website hosting provide a simple and practical hotlink protection tool, you will be able to shield your content from displaying on third-party sites with literally no more than two mouse clicks, even if you do not have much experience with such matters. The tool is included with the Hepsia hosting Control Panel and as soon as you open it, you will just have to pick the domain or subdomain that you would like to protect. Optionally, you may also choose if the hotlink protection will be active for the default domain root folder or exclusively for a subfolder. You will not need to do anything else, because our system will create an .htaccess file automatically within the needed location and shall add the necessary code in it. All Internet websites with enabled hotlink protection shall be listed inside exactly the same section, so you can disable this service for any of them with just a mouse click.
Hotlinking Protection in Semi-dedicated Hosting
If you have a semi-dedicated server account with our company and you discover that somebody has hotlinked any of your images, you should use the security tool which we have designed and integrated into our in-house built Hepsia hosting Control Panel. When you enable this function, a server-generated image shall appear on the third-party website in place of your actual images. You will only have to go to the Hotlink Protection section within the CP and choose the domain or subdomain that your website uses from a practical drop-down menu - it is as basic as that. When necessary, you shall also have the option to activate the function only for a particular subfolder and not for the website in general. Deactivating the function is as effortless - return to the same section, check the box next to the given website and then press the Delete button.
