An Operating System is the software that interacts with the hardware of a computer and works as the intermediary between applications and the hardware, including peripherals such as a printer, a computer mouse or a keyboard. When you run an app, it sends requests to the OS through an API (Application Program Interface) and the interaction is done via a command line or a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Just like a personal computer, hosting servers also have an Operating System that functions as a host for all of the software installed on them, which includes script applications or server-side software such as a flash server, a VOIP server, and so on. A virtual machine can be set up on a physical one, so you can install a guest OS on it and have a different system environment in contrast to the physical server host OS.
Multiple OS in VPS
In case you decide to buy one of our virtual private server plans, you will be able to choose one of the three Linux distributions which we provide for the OS of the servers - CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian. These are among the most well-known and most stable server OSs on the market and we offer them in order to give you a choice for the software environment of your machine in case that you would like to install some app with specific requirements with regards to the packages that have to be present on the server. We also offer three hosting Control Panels and which one of them you can use depends on the OS that you've chosen. We leave the option to change the server Operating System open, so if you want to use an app that requires an OS different from the one you already have, we can always re-install the VPS. We can also keep the OS up-to-date weekly by installing all of the security updates that may be available.
Multiple OS in Dedicated Hosting
If you decide to purchase one of our dedicated servers, you will find three Operating Systems on the registration page since we want to give you a wider choice with regard to the system environment on your machine as different apps could have certain requirements. CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian contain different modules developed by their large support communities, so you can select any of these OSs and enjoy a reliable and safe hosting service. Depending on your choice, you'll also have different Control Panels to choose from. Needless to say, we can always change the Operating System if the one you've selected at first doesn't meet the requirements of the software that you'd like to run. We can also upgrade the OS regularly to keep it as secure as possible with our Managed Services upgrade package.
